There are a number of things that a good driver should keep in mind when traveling by himself or with other people. Most of these rules are plain common sense. But perhaps because they are too plain and too common, people tend to overlook their importance for driving.
Before climbing into the car, be sure your tires are properly inflated. You should also give the car itself one final look-over, even if you took the trouble to examine it the night before. Things may have happened to your car overnight or you may have missed detecting some damages the previous night because it was too dark. If you are going on a long distance trip, getting your car checked up and conditioned some days earlier is advisable.
Most of us hate to be multi-tasked at home. We like to do things one at a time most of the time. An exception to this is when we drive. It must be the excitement that always attends sitting on the driver's seat. Whatever the reason, people like to multitask themselves while driving. They like to listen to the loud clamor of the radio, while eating a sandwich and drinking canned beer, while talking or texting on their cell phones, while fixing up their hair, while talking to their companions while driving. And this is one good way to court mishaps on the road.
The rule is do everything you will need to do in the space of time it will take to get to your destination before starting out in the car. What you can't do postpone until after you reach your destination. Forego listening to music, even if the sound of your expensive new CD player is fabulous. Put all of your concentration in your driving.
If there are children in the car, be sure and fasten them securely with their safety belts. Bring something along to keep them busy while on the road. On no account allow children to actively play in the car as this is a great source of distraction for the driver.
Drive slowly and defensively. There is no point trying to prove yourself a better driver on the road. Avoid making fancy maneuvers to overtake other cars or switch from one lane to the next. Don't rely on the skill of other drivers to avoid you or their courtesy to yield to you. Expect the worst from your fellow motorists. This goes for their driving skills as well as for their disposition. In this way you can condition yourself for diplomatic driving even if you get unpleasant surprises.
In this respect, maintain a courteous driving habit. Yield when necessary. Restrain any urges to get raging mad. This won't do anything to persuade other people and on the contrary will make them as stubborn as you are.
If you need to rest on the way, do so inside a wayside restaurant or fast foods joint. Children should never be left alone in an unlocked car. They may play around with the gadgets and the driving equipment. The driver himself should not stay in a parked car that is unlocked. This is the perfect situation for car-jacking. Thieves can just hop in, point a gun at the driver and force him to bring them anywhere.
Always slow down on approaching a corner or an intersection. Check that the coast is clear for you to either head straight ahead, turn right or turn left.
